About Smithwick's Ale
Smithwick's was founded in 1710 by John Smithwick in Killkenny, Ireland and produces what the brewery claims as Ireland's oldest ale. Prior to this, the brewery operated in the Saint Francis Abbey Brewery. This 14th century abbey can still be found in the current brewery compound.
This Irish red ale was first debuted during the Kilkenny Beer Festival as Smithwick's Number One. It has been brewed since the 1700's and was exported throughout most of the English colonies. During the 1800's, Smithwick's witnessed an ebb and flow of production and had many contracts to provide beer to the military. By 1950's, the owners decided to begin exploring new international markets and created an export ale for the United States stations with Boston, MA. In the 1965, Smithwick's was purchased by Guinness.
