About Hofbrauhaus

Hofbrau began in Bavaria, a state in southern Germany, back in 1589. The brewery was founded by William V the Arch Duke of Bavaria. During this period of German history, beer brewing was strictly controlled by king, dukes and royal courts. It was common for kings and nobility to own breweries and pass decries that favor their breweries and ban production of competing styles.

Hofbrau is owed by the Bavarian state and the Bavarian state government appoints the leadership of the company. The official name is Staatliches Hofbrauhaus in Munchen. This translates from German to State Owned Hofbrauhaus in Munich . The logo is an HB with a gold crown. The gold crown is a nod to the royal founding of the brand. Aside from producing world class beers, HB is famous for their beer hall in the city of Munich, Hofbrauhaus am Platzl Muchich. This beer hall is a top attraction in Munich and has hosted countless famous patrons over the centuries including Mozart, John F. Kennedy, and Louis Armstrong to name a few. After the close of World War II, American GIs were station in and around Bavaria. This introduced HB to American’s and many beer steins bearing the HB logo were brought back to the USA. Since then, the HB brand has greatly expanded and there are HB beer halls and restaurants in eight US cities.

How to Drink from a Beer Boot

The secret to drinking from the boot is to point the toe sideways. When the toe is pointed downward, the boot cannot be easily emptied. When the toe is pointed upwards, the liquid flows out of the boot very quickly and uncontrollably, usually spilling all over the drinker.

More about Beer Boots

The German custom of drinking from a boot shaped drinking vessel supposedly started as a German army tradition during World War I. Soldiers would pass around a leather boot of bier prior to engaging the enemy. It was considered good luck to flick the beer boot before and after drinking from it. Americans soldiers were introduced to the custom of drink from a glass beer boot while stationed in Germany after World War II. There is a trick to drinking from a beer boot as to not get showered with beer if the toe of the boot is pointed in the wrong direction. The American soldiers had great fun with the beer boots and the fine German beer during their time in Germany. Many of them brought back beer boots and beer steins with them on their return to United States.

So thirsty...
The only thing worse than cracking your boot is cracking your FULL boot. Somehow I managed not to swear loudly in front of my 3 year old and maintained my composure long enough to type & click my way through ordering a brand new 3 liter boot. A few short days later & I'm back in business. Pretty much an exact replica of the fallen vessel - only with fewer miles on it. Here's an idea for TrueBeer: Consider marketing a protective sock or shoe to help prevent similar boot-related tragedies.
