Bar Sets

Bar sets are assortments of tools useful in serving alcoholic drinks. Some sets of bartender tools are specific to wine or to mixed drinks, and some have bar gadgets suitable for both. A bar set is a very thoughtful gift for someone setting up a house that will include a home bar. A newly married couple or a new graduate may find the tools in a bar set invaluable. A bar set makes a great Father's Day gift.

Bar tools and how to use them

  • The waiter's key has a folding bottle opener on one end, a foil knife on the other and a fold-out corkscrew in the center. To open a bottle of wine, screw the corkscrew in until the hook on the bottle opener will rest against the lip of the mouth of the bottle, then pry the cork out.
  • Spouts or pourers are found in both bar sets specialized for wine and those for mixed drinks. They ensure accurate pouring and help eliminate drips.
  • Stoppers also come in bartender sets for both wine and liquor. They seal bottles to preserve the freshness of the contents and to prevent undesirable odors from escaping.
  • A wine thermometer is essential to make sure the wine is at the proper serving temperature.
  • A wine ring fits around the neck of a bottle to catch the drips
  • A Boston shaker is the heart of bar sets designed for mixed drinks. It consists of a mixing glass, in which drinks are mixed and a tin which covers it while the drinks are shaken. Usually anywhere from four to twelve shakes are adequate. The drink is then poured through a strainer into the serving glass. Some sets come with a "cheater tin." This is a metal cup that fits into the mixing glass and acts as a strainer.
  • A Hawthorne strainer, the kind with the wire coil, fits over the mouth of a Boston shaker to strain shaken drinks.
  • A julep strainer fits over the mouth of a mixing glass to strain drinks into the serving glass.  Perfect for use to make a mint Julep on the day of Kentucky Derby.
  • A muddler is a small wooden paddle used to crush things like herbs, sugar cubes and fruit.
  • Jiggers are measuring cups included in mixed drink bar sets. They hold anywhere from an ounce to an ounce and a half, the larger quantity being the industry standard for single drinks.
  • Bar spoons are long handled spoons used for stirring drinks.
  • A citrus juicer or reamer is used to extract juice from lemons, limes and oranges by hand.
  • Zesters cut citrus peel into bits or strips for garnishes.  A zester only removed the fragrant portion of the citrus skin leaving the bitter white part of the skin behind.
  •  Ice tongs are used to handle ice without touching it.
Accessories for a bar are a necessity for any household where alcohol is consumed. Bar items make the process of mixing drinks easier, allowing the home bartender to enjoy social interactions rather than struggling with makeshift bar tools. Bar accessories are among the small touches that make a home complete.
